The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari)
- Monday, September 21, 2015 7:00 p.m.
This brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. Called by Roger Ebert “the first true horror film,” it plunges audiences into a nightmare realm in which light, shadow, and substance are abstracted and set in eerie counterpoint with the depraved acts of Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) and the Sleepwalker (Conrad Veidt). This restoration was scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive, with English subtitles and a score by the Musikhochshule, Freiburg.
This screening is presented in association with the Max Reger Festival hosted by the Jacobs School of Music, on September 25–27, and is sponsored by the Jacobs School of Music in partnership with the Max Reger Foundation of America, David V. Cox, Founder and Chairman, with special support from Professor Janette Fishell and in-kind support from Professor Andrew Mead. (2K DCP Presentation)
