Based on true events, Haytarma is the first Ukrainian film about the 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars from the Crimean Peninsula. Ametkhan Sultan, a Tatar fighter pilot and decorated war hero is on leave in his hometown when the deportation begins. The film’s striking crowd scenes were created with the participation of over 1,000 extras from throughout Crimea, some of whom had experienced the deportation first-hand.
