Director Aparna Sen’s film is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, set in contemporary urban Bengal, with warring mafia families trying to develop a local slum. Parvati Baul, a traditional Bengali itinerate Baul singer, performs dramatic songs about universal love against the backdrop of communal violence. All the dialogue in the film is in poetic couplets.
