Queen Latifah stars as legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, during her transformation from a struggling young singer into “The Empress of the Blues,” becoming one of the most successful recording artists of the 1920s and an enduring icon today. The screenplay is based on a story by Horton Foote and Dee Rees, whose grandmother introduced her to Smith’s music as a child. Bessie won an Emmy® for Outstanding Television Movie and three others, including cinematography and music composition. (2K DCP Presentation)
