Director Sergei Loznitsa is scheduled to be present.

Constructed from archival footage, The Event casts an eye on the attempted coup in St. Petersburg in August 1991, an event hailed as the birth of “Russian democracy.” Mobilizing sounds to highlight both the stasis and confusion of these days, the film asks: What really happened in Russia in August 1991? What was the driving force behind the crowds on the Place Square in Leningrad? What exactly are we witnessing: the collapse of the regime or its creative re-branding? Who are these people looking at the camera: victors or victims? (2K DCP presentation)
