Esta Noite Encarnarei O Teu Cadaver

Just as Cinema Novo in the Sixties was beginning to find international audiences, in the depths of Sao Paulo’s infamous “Boca do Lixo” sleaze belt emerged a bizarre screen persona dedicated to the powers of darkness. “Ze do Caixão,” or Coffin Joe, strode onto the screen dressed in black and sporting 6-inch fingernails (yes, they were real), the star of a series of ultra-low budget, weirdly unsettling horror movies. This Night… was the second film in a very loosely-connected trilogy; already foiled once in his diabolical aims, Zé do Caixão continues his quest to father the perfect child, but the lengths to which he’ll go to realize his dream prove too much, even for the demons that drive him.

(35mm presentation, Portuguese language with English subtitles)
