Still image from the film The Lives of Others
Set in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this film presents the quiet life of Gerd Wiesler, a member of the secret police, as he becomes invested in the lives of the playwright and actress he monitors. This complex character study explores the role of art and free will in an oppressive society and showcases behaviors such as compassion, love and dignity thrown in relief against corruption, lust and greed.
