Set amongst the dark shadows of postwar Vienna, the film centers
on Holly Martin (memorably played by Joseph Cotten), a novelist looking
for his missing friend. While Orson Welles made a career with larger-than-life characters, it is the mysterious charm of his brief appearance as Harry Lime
that makes the path to this moment intoxicating. Written by Graham Greene and brilliantly directed by Carol Reed, especially in the closing chase sequence
through a series of tunnels, The Third Man is a definitive film-noir.
