Lana Turner and Kirk Douglas star in Vincente Minnelli’s classic take on the movie industry. Shameless producer Jonathan Shields (Douglas) enlists glamorous actress Georgia Lorrison (Turner), ambitious director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan) and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell) to collaborate on a movie. But as they recall their sordid histories with Shields, they each divulge the challenges of achieving success in Hollywood—and their misgivings about working with the town’s most successful producer. Unfolding in the three characters’ flashbacks, Minnelli’s film offers both a warm tribute to and sharp criticism of the nuts and bolts of Hollywood’s magic. Special thanks to the UCLA Film and Television Archive. (35mm presentation)
