Still image from the film The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three
An outfit of heavily-armed men hijack a New York City subway car and take its passengers hostage for a hefty ransom. The menacing and highly skilled criminals test the limits of the understaffed transit police headed by Lt. Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) and the city’s ineffectual mayor. Tensions build as it becomes apparent that at least one of the disguised men displays unpredictable, sociopathic tendencies, rendering negotiations exceptionally dangerous. After the film’s release, the NYC transit authority temporarily banned trains from leaving Pelham station at 1:23 to assuage fears. (35mm presentation)
