Meryl Streep plays Karen Silkwood, an Oklahoma woman who discovers a corporate cover-up of radiation leaks in the plutonium processing plant where she works. On her way to a meeting with the New York Times to go public with the information about the leak, she is involved in a mysterious car crash. Was this accidental or was foul-play involved to squelch her whistle-blower efforts? Under the direction of Mike Nichols, Streep’s Karen Silkwood is a flawed, very human, workingclass woman who gradually transforms into a union activist determined to make a difference.
