Jauja is a mythological earthly paradise, sought by many, but found by none. During the so-called “Conquest of the Desert” in Patagonia, 1882, Captain Gunnar Dinesen (Viggo Mortensen) travels from Denmark with his daughter to take an engineering job with the army. Ingeborg falls in love with a young soldier, and one night they run away together. When the Captain realizes what has happened he ventures into enemy territory in a desperate search for his daughter, which becomes a solitary quest to a place beyond time, where the past vanishes and the future has no meaning.
